So in this hazy period, and where everybody is either drinking herbal tea or similar to reduce the harmful impacts on our throats or body in general, I was introduced to an yummy, cooling alternative - coconut steamboat! The steamboat base is from pure coconut water straight out of coconut itself, with no artificial sweeteners added into soup. This unique steamboat eatery can be found at a traditional coffee shop along the Upper East Coast road.

 I went for the media tasting by cab as I was in a rush to get there after work. However, after I've arrived, I realised that the stall is actually quite accessible by public transport. It's simply a minute walk away from the bus stop that has buses taking you to various popular stations like Bedok / Tampines :)

Now, let us get started on the food itself!

Set prices start from $20, which is the small set for two. Great for couples who wants to have steamboat by their own yet wanna avoid over-ordering!

The stall also serves its own special sauce which fuses over 10 different herbs, served with fresh condiments such as garlic, chilli and / or lime of your choice.

We had a regular set, seafood combo, as well as the meat combo.

The chicken cubes are from kampung chickens, which are said to have less fat and are healthier for consumption as they are fed with natural ingredients, rather than antibiotics-laced chicken feed. Also, they are usually reared in free-range farms, allowing the chickens to roam freely which translates to healthily ;)

The beef and pork are hand-sliced pretty evenly thin, making them great for sabu sabu ;)



As mentioned, the soup base contains only coconut, with no sugar and water added. The soup on its own is naturally sweet, and becomes more flavourful as the ingredients are added in bit by bit.

Talk about Halloween and what come to mind are probably images of grinning Jack-o’-lanterns, costume parties and bowls of sugared treats. The festival has spawned countless pop culture creations for its spook factor. Remember Sleepy Hollow?

Falling on 31 October every year, Halloween originated as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1, and believed that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred on the night before that.

Samhain became a holy night of worship and fasting to honour the spirits who returned to the world of the living. It was only when the festival was brought over to America in the 1800s that it became more about community get-togethers instead of the occult and supernatural.

Trick or Treat?

The term "trick or treat" came about when poor citizens begged for food during the festivities and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives. Now, though, anything goes, at least for candy.

Apart from the candy, there are of course the costume parties that give us an excuse to shop. These costume parties, which were organised by teenagers and adults who felt they were too old for trick-or-treating, are a tradition that spilled over from America.

In Singapore, they have grown in popularity, judging by the Halloween parties organised by various bars, restaurants and clubs, including Saint James Power Station, Beer Market and Ku De Ta.

Velvet Confectionery - Cake Tasting / Review

Had chance to meet up with the ladies (Mia, Janel, and Andrea) for cakes few weekends back! We were hosted by Velvet Confectionery, located Robertson Quay, Watermark Condominium. The previous time I visited, it was Bridger’s Cafe.

Now that Velvet Confectionery has took over the shop front, this space remains unpretentious with both indoor, and alfresco seating by the river.

Let’s start with our favourite of the lot!

Nutella Cheesecake

Not sure if it’s psychological, but I find the cake tasting more like Ferrero rocher than Nutella, haha! The cheesecake is perfectly soft and creamy, complemented well by a crusty cookie base that hints of caramel. This was the favourite of ALL of us!

Carrot Cake

I don’t usually crave for carrot cakes for desserts because just like Mia, I tend to imagine them as savoury treats too. Lol. But the carrot cake at Velvet Confectionery is definitely far from being savoury! Being one of their best sellers, the carrot cake is pretty moist and loaded with crunchy goodies such as raisins, walnuts, and of cos, carrot bits. The cinnamon flavour is minimal, which is a good thing for me personally. 

Red Velvet Swirl Brownie

Fudge brownie, topped with an equally thick layer of cream cheese. Certainly for the sweet tooth.


Lemon Olive Oil Yoghurt Loaf

This cake is made without butter, but with olive oil instead. Hence the texture tends to be more crumbly. The taste is pretty light overall, with just a slight hint of lemon.

Devilish Chocolate Cupcake

The cake itself is quite soft and fluffy, with just the right amount of chocolate flavour. With the creamy chocolate icing on it, it is the perfect one to with your afternoon tea.
