TheShiokBook media launch @ The Laneway Market

Attended the launch of TheShiokBook at The Laneway Market recently. The cafĂ© has a clean, muji-feel to it, and beautifully decorated with babybreaths.
I love the place pretty much that we stayed for quite a while even after the event has ended, haha.

Now, TheShiokBook is a dining guide which offers either 1-for-1 deals, or 25% off the total bill at popular dining places in Singapore. There are more than 60 different partnering merchants with some popular hideouts such as Siam Society, and I Am Cafe. And The Laneway Market too! :)

TheShiokBook can be purchased here at $45 each.

What I like most about TheShiokBook is their corporate initiative to give back to the society. TheShiokBook has collaborated with 3 charities (mainly), Singapore Cancer Society, Assisi Hospice and Ronald McDonald House – For every book purchased from the website, S$10 will be donated to either of these charity organization of the buyer’s preference. What a perfect win-win plan!

Now, it's your turn to help them give back to society and enjoy the great deals with friends! :)

The Ranch Cafe • Steakhouse @ Geylang

Dropped by The Ranch at Aljunied area on Friday!

Okay, before you start thinking of a field of grass-grazing cattles or sheeps in Singapore, The Ranch is actually the name of a steakhouse cum brunch cafe.

The Ranch Cafe

71 Lorong 27 Geylang

Opening Hours
Daily: 11:30 - 23:00

Tel

Well-hidden along the row of shophouses, it means that the cafe is not too crowded, yet.
(I was rather reluctant to share this initially, hahaha!)

The awesome thing is that this steakhouse/cafe is a mere 5-min walk from the Aljunied MRT station, for those taking public transport.
Moreover, there is no GST and service charge. So what (price) you see is what you get, literally!

There is a private wine store adjoined to the steakhouse/cafe.

A beer a day, keeps the doctor away! :D

This place can get pretty romantic in the night with its hanging tiny lights, trimming around the couple seats area.

All-day breakkie $13.90
A hearty breakfast of juicy grilled chicken sausages, scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, grilled tomatoes, garlic bread, and baked beans.

This is a simple set of breakfast dish that taste so amazing when put together.
Even though many of the individual items might be easily prepared by ourselves, I thoroughly enjoyed this simple 'home-made' meal after a long week of work.
Besides, the scrambled eggs are made so fluffy & creamy that I can't possibly achieve :p

Bangers and mash $14.90
Personally I find the grilled german sausages (chicken & pork) quite run-of-the-mill.
The mashed potato, on the other hand, was good with its homemade gravy.

Was rushing off for an event right after the meal.
Would love to re-visit this place for its steak and wine ;)
And perhaps some wings and beer, to keep the doctor away.

Group Therapy Cafe @ Duxton Road

 photo GroupTherapyCafe6_zps3ae528ee.jpg

Group Therapy Cafe is a combination of events space + cafe/restaurant. Deliberately tucked away on the 2nd storey of the row of shophouses, it gives customers a platform to hide from the bustling CBD crowd.

Artisanal coffee and breakfast is the driving force behind Group Therapy Cafe. Their coffee beans are a blend of 100% Arabica beans, carefully crafted together with local roaster and freshly ground on premise for each and every cup.

Popular selections on the menu are the All-Day Breakfast items such as Poached Eggs & Smoked Salmon on Thick Toast as well as other lunch items like Paninis, Pies & Stews.

In addition, Group Therapy also serves a good range of craft beers, ciders and boutique wines which shouts out to many as a good Friday wind-down venue.

Oh did I already mention, there's no service charge at this cafe?

Macchiato $4.50
Came as a "surprise" cos it was a really tiny cup of coffee. Taste good, but.. I would prefer the serving to be a little more substantial?

See how small the cup of macchiato is, compared to the main courses (and that kopitiam coffee glass, lol).

The glass, by the way, is Cold pressed apple juice $5.50
Yummy and healthy, but again, wish there can be more.

Poached eggs $15
On thick toast with smoked salmon, gruyere and hollandaise sauce.

The eggs were huge and perfectly poached, paired with super thick fluffy toast!
Also, serving of the smoked salmon is rather generous, as well as the crazy heap of hollandaise sauce!

Steak & Cheese Pie $15
Lean beef cubes & melted cheddar in a shortcrust pastry, served with side salad and crisps.

The pastry was nice and buttery, suits our palate pretty well.
However, the beef cubes filling was a tad too dry and doesn't gel well with the shortcrust pastry.
Would prefer a more creamy/thicker cheesy pie.

MU Parlour @ Lorong Mambong, Holland Village

Holland Village is eminent for its vast-selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs suited for various occasions. However, those on level 2 of the shops are less prominent it seems, and most of us are usually lazy to climb up the stairways to check out the ‘unknown’ unless recommended.

MU Parlour is one of such, well-hidden on the 2nd level at Lorong Mambong, above Thai Express. Though it was name-dropped by a few friends over the past year, I visited it only recently.

Friday and Saturday: 1100am - 0200am

Fell in love with the interior of the cafe as soon as we stepped in – chic and white walls complemented by several modern, statement art pieces and a unique blend of whimsical furniture pieces. It was rather fun and we certainly took a long time trying to decide on our seats since there were numerous styles of mismatched tables & chairs available at the time we visited and everything look so pretty!

(hey there, doggie!)

Apparently pets are allowed, so pet owners can bring their dogs, cats, (or bunnies?) to chill out at the cafe? ;)

Serving gourmet burgers is the niche of the cafe and the one we had certainly lived up to its reputation! The patty was tender and juicy, and each set comes with a good serving of fries.
The lemon meringue tart was smooth (slightly too sourish for some of us) with a very buttery-tasting crust.
The poached eggs from the Mu breakfast were decent, though I would prefer more runny yolks. All burgers and breakfast sets includes garlic fries and they were lip-smacking! Very flavoursome with generous serving of real garlic bits.

Coffees on the other hand, were not very strong. To some, they may be run-of-the-mill.
Friend commented though, that the latte is good for a late afternoon drink since it doesn't seem to be as caffeine loaded as the coffees elsewhere. Also, might be suitable for coffee-beginners.

Waffles Set $15
With spicy pork & veal sausages, sunny-side up, grilled tomatoes, and salad

Latte $4.50

Lemon Meringue Tart $8
Lemon curd made with fresh lemons topped with a layer of classic Italian meringue

MU breakfast $16
Comes with poached eggs, spicy pork & veal sausages, streaky bacon, brioche, greens and garlic fries

No. 11 Burger $15
Beef patty, streaky bacon, avocado, cheese and charcoal burger bun
All the burgers come with crisp iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, fresh onions and side of garlic fries!

If you wish to make it a meal, there is a choice of milkshake with additional $5 and coffee + daily dessert for additional $9.

Macchiato $5

The service is quite slow, hence don’t go with a hungry stomach. However I can’t deny that sometimes I appreciate “slow” services since that means nobody would rush me to make my orders or clear my plates asking me to leave :)

Food may be pretty mediocre, but the quaint and charming interior of the place makes up for it more enough. A perfect cafe for spending a quiet afternoon, watching the world go by.
